4 Steps to Email Marketing Success

4 Steps for Email Marketing Success

Email marketing is so much more than just sending a monthly newsletter out to a list of people.

In order to really harness the true power of email marketing, there are some steps I’d recommend following to ensure success. When you follow these 4 steps, your email list could easily become one of the biggest assets to your business!

1. Grow: Get the right people excited to be on your email list

Obviously the first step in email marketing is getting subscribers to sign up to our email lists. But, just like with getting followers on Instagram, there’s no point having a list full of people if they’re not the RIGHT people.

The right people are people who:

  • Epitomise your ‘ideal customer’ for your business

  • Are excited to be on your list to receive your regular content (they’re not just there for a freebie!)

  • Will actually buy from you because you offer what they need/want

In the past I’ve ended up deleting an email list of over 10,000 subscribers for this very reason - they weren’t the right people, and so I realised they were never going to buy from me!

2. Nurture: Deliver valuable, relevant content

If you have the right people on your email list, they’ll be keen to hear from you on a regular basis so it’s important to have a plan for sending good quality email content to them consistently.

It doesn’t necessarily matter how often you send emails to your list, as long as you’re consistent and they know what to expect!

Make sure that with each email, you’re reminding them of why it’s good for them to continue being on your list, by sending them high value, engaging content that is tailored to them.

I use Flodesk as my email marketing software as they make it easy to design beautiful emails. I have a whole guide on it here!

3. Automate: Save time with automations

You can take some of the pressure off constantly creating fresh content by using automations in your email marketing.

Think about it - if you send out an epic email that gets loads of engagement, and then a new subscriber joins your list the next day after you’ve sent it, they’re going to miss out on that great content.

But it doesn’t have to go to waste! You can put your best content into automated email sequences that get sent out to every new subscriber, no matter when they sign up.

You can use automations for all sorts of things, such as ‘welcome sequences’, delivering ‘opt-in freebies’, and sales funnels too (which I’ll mentioned below!).

4. Monetise: Turn email subscribers into paying customers

Running and building an email list can take time and effort (and of course there is usually a financial cost to using email marketing software too), so we want to make sure that this is all giving us a ‘return on investment to make it worthwhile!

As small business owners, we’re juggling so many things that we simply can’t afford to be dong things in our businesses that don’t have some kind of benefit or help pay the bills, which is why having a plan for making money from your email list is so important.

There are typically 3 main ways you might try and turn your subscribers into customers from your list:

  • Sending regular promotional emails (with discounts or new product/service info)

  • Sending regular high value content to build trust & authority

  • Creating sales funnels that nurture subscribers towards taking action
